San Sebastian: Culinary Adventures and Cider in the Orchard

San Sebastian’s Gastronomic gem

San Sebastián’s Old Town, or Parte Vieja, is the beating heart of the city. Its charming cobbled streets are packed with history, lively pintxos bars, and Basque character, making it the perfect place to experience the city’s world-famous food and vibrant atmosphere.

Whether you’re drawn by its history, food, or atmosphere, San Sebastián’s Old Town offers an authentic taste of Basque culture. Best explored on foot, it’s a place to slow down, soak up the atmosphere, and savour every moment.

Some places are known for their beauty, others for their food. San Sebastián’s Old Town (Parte Vieja) is one of the rare destinations that excels at both. From the moment I arrived, it more than lived up to its reputation, blending historic charm with one of the finest food scenes I’ve ever experienced.

To experience San Sebastián’s Old Town like a local, embrace the tradition of txikiteo—hopping from bar to bar for a drink and a pintxo. Be sure to visit Calle 31 de Agosto, one of the best streets to soak up the lively atmosphere and sample some of the city’s finest pintxos.

Calle 31 de Agosto, the only street to survive the devastating fire of 1813, is as rich in history as it is in flavour. Today, it’s lined with outstanding pintxos bars and cafés, offering everything from savoury local favourites to irresistible sweet treats.

The narrow streets buzzed with life from morning until late evening. Lively bars spilt onto the pavements, locals gathered over glasses of wine, and colourful pintxos filled every counter. Here, food is more than a meal—it’s a way of life.

I followed the local tradition of visiting multiple bars, enjoying a pintxo and a drink at each, with each bar offering its own speciality, such as grilled seafood, Iberian ham, and creative flavour combinations on fresh bread.

“Bar hopping is an art form here. By grabbing just one pintxo and a drink at each stop, I got a whirlwind tour of the city’s culinary highlights:

The relaxed, sociable atmosphere, characterised by lingering over food, shared plates, and unhurried conversations, left a lasting impression.

The Old Town isn’t just a paradise for food lovers—it’s also the perfect place to sample the Basque Country’s local drinks. Whether sipping a refreshing glass of Txakoli, traditionally poured from height to enhance its gentle sparkle, or enjoying a crisp Basque cider between pintxos, every drink is part of the experience.

Between stops, I wandered through the charming streets of the Old Town, taking in the historic buildings, lively squares, and vibrant atmosphere. With no real destination in mind, I followed whichever street caught my eye, discovering something new around every corner.

The Sweet Intermission: Pastelería La Zaragozana

After sampling the incredible pintxos, I couldn’t resist stopping at Pastelería La Zaragozana for something sweet. With its tempting display of traditional Basque pastries and cakes, it was the perfect way to end my culinary adventure through San Sebastián’s Old Town.

Although the shop is famous for its artisan ice cream, I couldn’t resist trying the legendary Basque cheesecake. Rich, creamy, and perfectly caramelised, it was the ideal sweet finale after a day of grazing on pintxos.

A favourite memory of San Sebastián’s Old Town is an evening spent with friends, exploring the streets, enjoying pintxos, and sampling local drinks, all while capturing the city’s warm, sociable atmosphere.

The evening in Old Town was memorable due to great food, laughter, and wonderful company, with the true highlight being the cherished memories created with friends.

Basque dining is all about slowing down, sharing great food, and enjoying good company. When we discovered our friends would be in San Sebastián at the same time, we took the opportunity to experience this tradition together, gathering around the table to enjoy an authentic meal and make lasting memories.

Visit San Sebastián with an appetite and a sense of adventure. Wander without a strict plan, follow the streets that catch your eye, and step into the bars that invite you in. Enjoy tempting pintxos, sip local drinks, and embrace the city’s vibrant food culture. Often, it’s these spontaneous moments that reveal the true magic of the Old Town.

A journey through San Sebastián’s Old Town, discovering the joy of pintxos, local drinks, traditional flavours, and unforgettable moments shared with friends. Beyond the food itself, it’s the atmosphere, spontaneity, and memories created along the way that make this Basque city truly special.

Catching Cider at Lizeaga: A Taste of Basque Tradition

If you’re visiting San Sebastián, I’d highly recommend setting aside an afternoon or evening to experience a traditional cider house.

A highlight of the trip was visiting Lizeaga Sagardotegia, a traditional cider house in Astigarraga that offers a unique and memorable experience outside San Sebastián.

The excitement began when “Txotx!” was shouted, prompting everyone to gather around a large barrel. A tap was opened, releasing a stream of cider into the air. I joined the queue with a glass and successfully caught the cider after a few attempts, making it a highlight of the evening.

This cider was unlike anything I’d ever tasted. It was dry, crisp, and slightly sharp, offering an incredibly refreshing taste. Drinking it straight from the barrel heightened its specialness, and every “Txotx!” was a prompt to get up, chat with fellow guests, and savour another fresh pour.

The meal promised to be extraordinary, set in a rustic building with character, featuring wooden barrels and communal tables that created a warm, lively atmosphere. Families, friends, and visitors gathered to experience one of the Basque Country’s oldest traditions.

The meal was a delightful experience, starting with a flavourful traditional cod omelette and followed by an impressive salt cod with peppers. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared and presented, creating a memorable culinary journey.

The highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the steak, which was grilled to absolute perfection. Its quality was evident in every bite, with a tender texture and rich flavour that truly showcased the chef’s skill.

We ended on a high note with local Idiazabal cheese, quince paste, and walnuts, a classic Basque treat that paired wonderfully with the final glasses of cider.

Nobody was rushing. The meal unfolded at its own pace, with everyone getting up together whenever the cider was flowing. It felt less like dining in a restaurant and more like being welcomed into a tradition that has been bringing people together for generations.

Reflecting on my visit, Lizeaga was not just a dining spot; it offered an authentic immersion into Basque culture. The experience was enriched by the local cuisine, locally crafted cider, and genuine hospitality, which made me feel like an integral part of the event.

I ended my day in San Sebastián sipping a bottle of Lizeaga’s cider on my hotel balcony overlooking La Concha Bay, the flavours evoking the lively Basque cider house experience and its centuries-old tradition.

Verdict

If you’re visiting San Sebastián, make time to venture beyond the Old Town and experience a traditional cider house. At Lizeaga, catching cider straight from the barrel is more than just a travel experience—it’s a memorable taste of Basque culture that stays with you long after the final glass has been poured.
