San Sebastian’s beaches
La Concha, stunning and sophisticated
Nestled in the heart of San Sebastián, La Concha is one of Europe’s most beautiful urban beaches. Its calm turquoise waters, elegant promenade, and iconic shell-shaped bay create a breathtaking setting that captures the city’s unique charm.
For me, this serene coastal escape offers golden sandy bays, peaceful waters perfect for swimming, and the ideal balance of relaxation and gentle exploration.
I loved the flat coastal promenades that stretch beyond the beaches, perfect for a leisurely walk or cycle while taking in views of the sea, charming cafés, and lively local markets.

I appreciated how well-equipped the beach is, with clean facilities, showers, changing areas, and summer lifeguards, making it a comfortable and enjoyable place to relax.
Ondarreta Beach: The Local Favorite
While La Concha may steal the spotlight, I found Ondarreta to be a quieter and more charming escape at the foot of Monte Igueldo. Although it is the smallest of San Sebastián’s three beaches, its peaceful atmosphere, beautiful setting, and relaxed character make it truly special.
The Vibe: Ondarreta has a much more laid-back, family-friendly atmosphere than La Concha. It feels like a true neighbourhood beach, where locals come to relax, enjoy the calm surroundings, and escape the busier parts of the city.
The Look: Ondarreta’s wide golden sands are beautifully framed by iconic blue-and-white striped beach tents, with the striking Comb of the Wind sculptures adding a dramatic artistic touch at the far end of the shore.
The Water: Sheltered by the bay and the presence of Santa Clara Island, Ondarreta’s waters are wonderfully calm and shallow, making it the perfect spot for a peaceful and refreshing swim.
Zurriola Beach vibrant and lively
Zurriola Beach, located in San Sebastián’s Gros district, offers a lively seaside atmosphere and a vibrant local feel. Facing the open ocean across the river from La Concha and Ondarreta, it is a favourite spot for surfers, young locals, and visitors seeking a more energetic beach experience.
While La Concha and Ondarreta are known for their calm, sheltered waters, Zurriola offers a completely different experience with its open views of the Bay of Biscay. Its stronger waves make it a favourite destination for surfers, bodyboarders, and anyone looking to enjoy a more active beach atmosphere.

Miramar Palace: San Sebastián’s Royal English Estate

For me, an evening stroll along La Concha Beach is one of San Sebastián’s most special moments. The elegant white railings, peaceful shoreline, and wet sand glowing beneath the orange sunset create a truly unforgettable atmosphere.
For me, this is the perfect place to slow down and enjoy a peaceful walk, taking in the calm surroundings before heading into the charming Old Town for an unforgettable evening of dining and exploring.
Local Vibe Check: Unlike the lively atmosphere of party beaches, sunset at La Concha feels like a cherished local ritual. I loved seeing people gather along the stone walls with gelato or takeaway pintxos from the Old Town, sharing a relaxed moment as the day gently comes to an end.
2. The Panoramic View: Monte Igueldo
For me, reaching the summit of Monte Igueldo at golden hour is one of San Sebastián’s most magical experiences. The historic funicular makes the journey effortless, and the warm sunset light over the shell-shaped bay and city skyline creates a truly unforgettable view.

If you are planning a trip to San Sebastián and trying to decide where to stay, the Mercure Monte Igueldo is a unique choice.
Perched high on the mountain, it offers a completely different experience from the city centre. It has a peaceful atmosphere, sweeping views, and a sense of escape above the bustle below.
Here is my honest breakdown of the highlights and drawbacks:
The property offers sweeping views of La Concha Bay, Santa Clara Island, and unforgettable sunsets. Its serene setting and spectacular outdoor pool, a floating oasis above the Atlantic, make it a truly special escape.
The Catch: The mountain location does mean a little more planning is needed, as you’re somewhat removed from the city centre. You’ll need to use a taxi, bus, or the historic funicular to get to and from the property, so you won’t have the convenience of simply stepping out to explore local tapas bars and restaurants on foot.
Stay here if you prioritise breathtaking views, peaceful surroundings, and a relaxing retreat. You also don’t mind using the funicular or a taxi to explore the city.
Skip it if you want to step straight from your hotel lobby into the lively heart of the city, with easy access to local tapas bars, restaurants, and the energy of San Sebastián’s streets.
